A country with a pivotal role in the Middle East, Jordan continues its efforts at economic development, including opening up for trade and privatizing state owned companies. At the same time, as a small country in a volatile region, Jordan must overcome a variety of economic challenges. Join Mr. Owens for a discussion on Jordan’s economy with a special focus on renewable energy, medical technology, and information communication technology.

Sanford Owens arrived as the Senior Commercial Officer (SCO) to the EBRD in August of 2006 for a four year tour of duty. Prior to serving in London, he was the Senior Commercial Officer in Slovakia from August 2002 until July 2006 and served as the first full-time SCO in Slovakia at a time of rapid economic development. He also served as Regional Commercial Attaché for the Caribbean region from June 1999 to August 2001. Based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic he acted as Regional Senior Commercial Officer for the Caribbean Region including Haiti. In his first overseas assignment, he was posted to Singapore as Commercial Attaché from 1994 to 1998 and was responsible for commercial activities in Brunei. Prior to joining the Foreign Commercial Service he worked in Seattle, San Francisco, and San Diego at Commerce’s Export Assistance Centers on behalf of U.S. companies entering international markets. His first work experience was with the Georgia Power Company in Atlanta, Georgia. He has a BS in Business Administration from Auburn University.
